Read More โAcross the UK, families are facing a difficult reality. On one side, social care services are stretched thin, carers sometimes only have 10โ15 minutes to visit each person because of tight budgets and high demand. On the other side, residential care homes can feel overwhelming and costly, often leaving little choice for families who want their loved ones to remain at home.
So, the question remains:
Many older people fall into the space between these two extremes. They donโt quite need a care home, but they also canโt thrive with only short visits.
notionnoThis is the group who may be:
This โin-between spaceโ is where dignity is often lost. Not because families donโt care, but because the system doesnโt always provide whatโs truly needed.
It is often daughters, sons, and spouses who step into the gap. They become unpaid carers, juggling jobs, children, and their own health, while trying to keep loved ones safe.
They do it out of love but too many reach burnout before real help is arranged.
For me, this gap is deeply personal. I saw it first-hand through my nursing work and in the stories families shared with me. Too many people were falling through the cracks.
Thatโs why I started The Village Nurse Ltd, to provide nurse-led, compassionate care that gives older people not just support, but time, dignity, and connection.
As our population ages, this gap will only grow wider unless new solutions step forward. Local communities, social prescribers, independent providers, and families all have a role to play.
But the real question is:
Because aged care isnโt just about services. Itโs about people, connection, and humanity.
When the sun goes down, life at home doesnโt stop for older adults and their families. In fact, the hours between dusk and dawn can be the most vulnerableโfor falls, confusion, or simply the deep loneliness that creeps in when the world is quiet.
Many people assume care is only needed during the day. But as a nurse, Iโve seen how:
These silent hours can make the difference between staying safely at home or needing to move into residential care.
Overnight or live-in care isnโt just about โbeing there.โ It means:
If youโre noticing:
It might be time to consider extra support through the night. The right help can keep your loved one safe and comfortableโwhile giving the whole family the rest they deserve.
